Plasmalogens

Plasmalogens were accidentally discovered in the 1920s and have, in the last 20 years, entered the domain of research and investigation.

Simply put, low plasmalogen levels correlate to various chronic diseases including Alzheimer’s, dementia, Parkinson’s, Multiple Sclerosis, heart attacks, angina, peripheral artery disease, cerebrovascular issues including stroke, diabetes, fatty liver disease and various cancers including pancreatic, breast and colon.

Through the restoration of plasmalogens, these illnesses can definitely be improved.

We don’t believe that any drug can make this claim, since most drugs are designed to control or mitigate symptoms, but not to reverse and restore function.

Consider the use of plasmalogens as simply a supplement, to improve the quality of physical and mental health, and to increase longevity.

What Are Plasmalogens?

Plasmalogens are a subclass of phospholipids which are commonly found in the cell membranes of the neurological, immune and cardiovascular systems.

Unless you have a degree in human lipid biochemistry, the production, action and life-supporting qualities of plasmalogens is extremely complex and challenging to explain.

This complexity is likely the main reason why you’ve never heard of them.  Reading through the last two decades of research on plasmalogens, and even online presentations by scientists is way over the head of most people.

You don’t need to know the technical details in order to benefit from plamalogens, but here are a few highlights.

They are manufactured inside our liver cells by peroxisomes from various dietary fats.

Once excreted by liver cells, plasmalogens are transported through the body on cholesterol lipids, primarily the high density lipoproteins, or HDLs.

Plasmalogens are highly concentrated in specialized cell membranes such as myelin, the insulation surrounding nerve cells.  Even more importantly, one of their more important actions takes place at the junction between one nerve cell and the next, called the synaptic cleft.

They are vital for optimizing the release of neurotransmitters.

They promote optimal cognition.

They play an important role with the central and peripheral nervous systems; muscle contraction and relaxation, cognition, vision and many others.

They are essential components of sub-cellular membranes including the nucleus, endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria.

They also act as a very strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory.

How To Check Plasmalogen Levels

Because of the dedication of Dr. Dayan Goodenowe, an extremely advanced system of technology was developed to determine blood and body biomarkers, including plasmalogens.

This technology has primarily two benefits.

First, we can determine various deficiencies which are commonly contributing to a person’s ill-health.  Even when a person is feeling relatively well, these deficiencies indicate a tendency, and if corrected early on, can prevent a person from slipping into a chronic illness.

Second, the technology can be used to monitor progress and to be sure our recommendations have resulted in corrections.

Should not medicine be telling us how to prevent future events of ill-health?

I suppose there is the 3rd more obvious benefit with this technology, and that is the measurement of plasmalogen levels.

Most of us might think that at some point in our life, we will develop a chronic illness.  Yet some of us live long and healthy lives.

Why is this?

On the road to developing a chronic illness, we pass through a time of mild symptoms where the body is telling us something, that something is out of balance.

If we head the body’s communication, we try to understand what is going on…. we listen.

If we don’t and we simply continue on, taking various over the counter medications and drugs, the causes remain and slip further and further towards a chronic condition.

Often our physician, when labs don’t show any imbalances, will simply say it’s part of getting older, or maybe it’s a virus, or stress, or it’s psychological.

But what if there was a way to know the underlying causes of these symptoms?

I think this is the true gift of Dr. Goodenowe’s work, to look well below the surface and to know what corrections we can make to prevent a chronic condition.

Primary Causes of Illness

Although plasmalogens have been proven to be very effective for certain illnesses, other underlying conditions besides low plasmalogens must be investigated and remediated.

When a person visits with their physician and explains their various symptoms, and whether or not their lab results explain the reasons for their condition, there’s one question which remains unanswered.

And what is this question?

Why?  Doctor….. what has caused me to develop this condition?

This question is seldom answered by physicians who turn to medications to remedy the symptoms.

Answering this question is important if you wish to preserve and to recover your health.

No matter what condition a person is suffering from, there are three basic causes which underlie our physical and mental symptoms.

Nutritional Deficiencies 1st Cause

We are made up of trillions of cells and it is the optimal function of all these cells which determines the level of our health.

If our cells do not receive the nutrients they require to function optimally, then we will experience a variety of symptoms.

Obviously this pertains to the foods we eat and the nutrients they contain.  Eating foods which are in their natural state, rather than having been modified or altered in some way, is the best approach.

But then there is the digestion of these foods, and many people suffer from indigestion and the incomplete breakdown of their food.

When this happens, there is malabsorption or the incomplete assimilation of nutrients.

Obviously, in this state of malnutrition our cells decline in their function and we slowly drift into a wide variety of physical and mental symptoms.

Environmental Toxins 2nd Cause

We are not living in a pristine environment.  We are exposed to a plethora of chemicals in our home and working environments, and in our food, air and water.

To use an analogy, when we were born, our body was clear of environmental toxins, thus the image of the empty bowl.

Over the years we have accumulated toxins through our skin, lungs and digestive system.

Slowly the bowl fills.

During this ‘filling’ we are relatively healthy, but if the vessel becomes completely full and begins to spill over the lip, this equates to symptoms, both physical and mental.

The objective then is to prevent toxins from entering the bowl and simultaneously to empty it, what’s considered to be detoxification.

Obviously, using this analogy, you don’t want to use medications to decrease symptoms.  You want to take the alternate route in order to restore health and vitality.

Chronic Infections 3rd Cause

Our blood is supposed to be sterile and completely free of bacteria, viruses and mold, but many people experience symptoms because of low-grade, chronic, systemic infections.

All bacteria, viruses and mold excrete biotoxins which lead to inflammation and wide variety of symptoms.

If these symptoms are simply treated with various medication, even antibiotics, antivirals and antifungals, they will often not completely resolve these issues, in fact they may make things worse because of increased resistance.

There are some very effective alternative therapies to resolve these underlying infections.

I can assess deficiencies which can then be corrected, and it can monitor various key biochemical systems to know how we might be drifting away from optimal, key components of health.

Should not medicine be telling us how to prevent future events of ill-health?

With regards to disease, all of us advance from health and wellness towards the end of our lives, with some of us free from disease and chronic illness.

We could say that the development of a chronic illness passes through a functional stage to a stage of pathology.

In the functional stage, the typical lab tests ordered by almost all physicians will disclose nothing, and we are told that it’s simply ageing or a virus, or stress, or it’s psychological.

And this is partly because there is dysfunction with nothing severe enough to cause abnormal changes in our biochemistry.

Then, as time passes, and we don’t address the underlying causes of this dysfunction, until finally there is pathology or at least a condition which is too much for our body to maintain a balance or homeostasis.

But what if there was a way to know the underlying causes of dysfunction before it becomes more severe, enough to cause some pathology.

I think this is the true gift of Dr. Goodenowe’s work, to look well below the surface and to know what corrections we can make to prevent a chronic condition.
